The memory is of being molested by a relative at age 4. I cannot accept that this happened. Is there any evidence to support false memories that come from nowhere? One of the memories is of being caught by my mother. If this had really happened, my parents would have killed him, and we certainly would not be the close-knit family we are today. I told my mother about having been raped at 15 and again at 21 and she reacted very strongly to this.

This has driven me insane for years. Can anyone help?

It will be hard to determine if you dreamt or imagined being molested at 4 or if it happened. I vividly remembering being chased down the steps by an angry peach when I was three. I also vividly remember being able to float down steps touching briefly on every three or four at a very early age. I know these things didn't happen since I reached the age of reason. You cannot know it didn't happen to you because it is not unreasonable. However, it IS very possible that you did imagine or dream it. Why not let it go, live in the present and make an effort to be happy?

Have you ever spoken to your mother about this?
It is a very difficult subject, for sure. If it did happen, there are many reasons why your parents may have buried it--- and hoped you were so young that you would not remember it, and therefore not be affected by it. (Their reasoning would be wrong, of course, but still that could have happened)
You really need to talk with her, and hope she will be strong enough to tell you the truth.
If she denies it and you still feel it happened, seek help from a counselor. It could be a 'false memory' but I have doubts about that. Probably the counseling would be a good idea anyway-- You need someone who you are not afraid to tell about these things.
BTW You would be amazed how many women have had similar experiences. An infuriatingly HUGE percentage!

Some memories can come from dreams. You could have dreamt of something...and felt something like this.Later when you discovered that such a thing exists as sexual abuse...you may have associated it with the feeling yoiu had during that dream.

definitely get counseling. A problem is a problem when it repeats itself over and over like when you're 15 and 21...

your health insurance should flip for the psychiatry bill.

Please see a professional who can help you wade through all of this. I don't think memories like that can be imagined or made up out of nowhere. Good luck.
