Who says all Beatles songs have a meaning? Paul came up with "Yellow Submarine" and said he'd like to someday find kids singing it, like "Baa Baa Black Sheep" or "Sing a Song of Sixpence". The band was hanging out with Donovan at the time, and he came up with the line "Sky of blue, sea of green". So there's probably no 'deeper' meaning to the song other than the suface storyline. It's just a song for kids.

Paul McCartney wrote this as a children's story. The story goes that Paul was lying in bed late one night, and an idea popped in his head to write a children's song - the actual song may have been a spin-off from Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 And #35." Paul purposely used short words in the lyrics because he wanted kids to pick it up early and sing along. (thanks, Ant - Belleville, Canada)

In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land of submarines

So we sailed up to the sun
'Till we found the sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
In our yellow submarine

We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

And our friends are all on board
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play

We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

As we live a life of ease
Everyone of us has all we need
Sky of blue and sea of green
In our yellow submarine

We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine

Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

It was supposed to be a kids song for Ringo to sing. I think some of the references were from their acid trips.

It means that Paul, John, George and Ringo were taking lots of drugs.
