I was curious of how many people find yahoo answers a place to get away from it all in your mind and relax and learn about others lives and have a comforting thought in your mind that you might be able to help someone? Also you are continuously learning new things and become absorbed in what you are doing and realize that you are using this place as a place to unwind..People used to go to bars and things to unwind now the are at home on their computers and going from place to place.I don't know about you but find it interesting what people talk about on here and become detached from an otherwise quiet reclusive life..Does it help you to indulge in answering or writing questions ,is it a release of some kind. Please share your opinions with me..Thanks

I know I find this a place to come hide from it all. I've recently been struggling with some major change (I'm somewhat afraid of change, and I don't handle most of it well) and I would come here when I was feeling most depressed to forget about it for a while. I want to be a psychologist and help people out, so this is pretty much what I like to do... Except I also answered math and science questions and such as well. But I definitely like coming here to let my mind fixate on something other than my troubles and instead try to answer some other people's questions... Or laugh at the really stupid and pointless ones.

Yahoo! Answers is a distraction from dealing with the emotional pain we all have. It seems like entertainment or even as if we are seeking help. We even spend loads of time answering others' questions so it feels like we are helping others (and we often are). However, in reality, we are avoiding dealing with the real issues in our lives when we get past a certain point -- and we ALL know the point when it comes. You know you could be doing something to help your life improve but instead the path of least resistance is to come on here.

I find that when I am really avoiding things/issues, I will post a question that will at least tangentially deal with my real stuff -- it's all true but how many questions can a person realistically ask???

So, it's a fun distraction that could become addicting and problematic like any other compulsive behavior if we are not careful.

Now, what other questions can I respond to so I don't have to think about my failed marriage or why I'm having these odd dreams....

:)

Interesting idea--- Perhaps such a forum as yahoo is taking the place of the neighborhood bar, etc. where people used to sit and have face-to-face conversations. Some may see this as a bad thing-- On the other hand, conversations in such places are so prone to chance-- IF you can find someone there who is interested in the same things as you are-- And prone to complications as well (unwanted romantic attention, rude drunks, driving home in bad weather, etc.)
So, yes, I do think people in general like to use yahoo to unwind--- to share a viewpoint--hear an opinion-- laugh, perhaps try to help someone, or even be helped. The anonymity allows one to reveal things they may not want to reveal in their neighborhoods or to co-workers or relatives.
Plus it is entertaining--- and you don't have to put on make-up, wear nice clothes--- or ANY clothes, if you choose!
Its fun!

Yes, just like you said. It's also a way of keeping in touch with past stomping grounds. I've lived pretty much everywhere, and now, tucked away in my little corner of New Zealand, I sometimes miss conversations in French... or the hearty banter of the Germans... or a dose of American world view... and then I come here and open up the little window, and there they all are, those worlds, fresh and real, for me to enjoy almost as if I were there.

It helps me vent, and to exercise my mind. I love to tell those morons that think they have all of the answers where to get off. Someone needs to stick up for the underdog. And it makes me feel good to do so. I also like to help the kids in need of some guidance. As an old guy, I have seen a lot, and can help. This is my way of being a part of something.
