As a Referee, since I did not see what Zidane did, but the AR brought it to my attention, then yes, I would have red carded Zidane. As for Materazzi, if the AR heard what he said, and it was not just the general trash talking, but a racial or anti-Muslim comment towards Zidane, then yes, he would have received a red card also under FIFA's anti racial standards. BUT, it would definitely have to be heard and understood by the Referee or the AR. But if no one heard what Materazzi said, then I would not have given any card to him, just the red to Zidane.

Yes, I would have he deserved it! I would have given Materazzi a yellow card! I still can't believe Zidane would do something so dumb, being and experienced player and all. He should have waited till after, at least. Materazzi should have never said that!
Specially in the World Cup.

**** like that goes on all the time in sports (Materazzi talking crap I mean). It's a player's ability get into another's head that is essential a lot of the times.
As much as I hate Materazzi, he got into Zidane's head, and Zidane's head conversely got into Materazzi.
Zidane's was a red card offense, Materazzi was a warning at most. He didn't make physical contact, didn't foul Zidane, he was just behind a ****.

I would have sent them both off or gave them both yellow cards, the decision should have been the same to both parties, that ugly rat materazzi got away with it........ i would have done the same if i was Zidane, if a rat like materazzi had insulted my mother or sister ..not just once...but 3 times...i would have done the same as Zidane if not more, so my guess is if i was the referee, yellow cards for both players would have been fair cuz this is a final match, decisions should be taken carefully and they should be fair, sending Zidane off was the best thing that could have happened to Italy ...the result was Italy winning the worldcup... so sending the Legend off wasn't fair at all....

Well the speculation is to as whether the linesman or 4th official did see it. They say they did (I dont remember which but one of the two) so nothing proves otherwise. The official Fifa communication at the time was that either the linesman or 4th official (I am not sure or remember which) saw it live, not on video. Either way he did commit the foul and it was a red card offense so I do not see how it would be too unfair that he received the red card. Some men get convicted of crimes with no proof tho they DID commit them, similarly the opposite, and likewise in football.

of course i don't know what the debate is about here. if i see one player assault another, then of course i'm going to red card him. if materazzi had been the one to attack zidane i would have carded him too. a real man doesn't lose control of himself that way, it's silly, stupid, and incredibly immature. especially over someone who's obviously trying to provoke you into doing exactly that. any french fan who likes what zidane did apparently considers football violence more important than a world cup title. materazzi said something stupid, but that doesn't mean he should have been carded, he was just provoking zidane (who has always been immature and violent). zidane decided that at that moment, hurting materazzi was so important that it outweighed the importance of winning another title. i hope he's proud of that, because now he's old, washedup, and out of the game, and he can't even say that he's won more titles than materazzi
