i remember reading somewhere online that its not actually the corn kernel.. its the outside 'shell' of the corn that you see.

ha I knew that was how the question was going to end!
It has the same physics of what happens to lost socks... I worked on it for my senior thesis and it took all semester and I finally got it nailed and it was so complicated my professor couldn't figure it out
