When one stream meets another and they merge together, the smaller stream is known as a tributary. It takes many tributary streams to form a river.

Rain falls on the ground and gets to running in the same little ditch for a long time - you have seen that correct? Well imagine it over years and years, and the ditch gets worn away and worn away. I am talking YEARS, centuries and millenia of this goes on and the cut away bit gets deeper and deeper - makes a VALLEY. Imagine!!!

So, the river get joined by other little ditchy bits and gets more volume of water until it gets to the sea.

If the ground is soft - sand or stuff, the river valley forms one shape, if it is solid rock, you get a different valley shape. Some rivers meander (curve a lot) and some are directer. Depends.
