We only evolved to talk. We never throughout history thought, "Hey! I am gonna carve symbols into this here stone, and make them stand for the words I speak."

Then we would never know how to read. Carving symbols into stones was a start. There are still many people that have never learned to write or read. We would be like the average dog, cat or bird. Incapable of evolving to where we are now, but communicate on a different level.

It would mean a loss of certain events in history, since history is best recalled through written documents and so forth. But otherwise, we would survive. Most of our modern technology would be different, though. And language would change faster.

Some native american tribes never created a written language. But that was because they never needed it; their culture used the spoken language only.
We only have it because we needed it. We'd be a different culture if we never invented written languages. I think there'd be more emphasis on social life.

Probably overall better.

I mean, we would not live as long but we'd not have developed the strength to destroy our planet with pollution and weapons of war.

we would probably still be in the stone age and religions would be completely different.

We would use sign language, and that would be enough.
