Guinea pigs are great animals! I have two boys, one old (I adopted him from a shelter at 1 1/2 years old) and a young one that a friend bought from PetSmart...she didn't want him anymore because he didn't get along with HER pig, so I offered to take him. Of course, I should have realized that he wouldn't get along with my older one...even though I got the older one so that he could have a friend. He's too dominant for him and is mean. But basically two or more pigs of the same gender get along great with eachother (two males will most of the time get along).
They are SO sweet! They do this thing called popcorning when they're happy (also when you talk to them, feed them etc.)...they jump up in the air and twist their bodies, sometimes they squeak loudly while doing it. They get so happy when they hear your voice. They're very talkative. They love it when you let them sit on your lap, your chest, or cuddle in your neck/hair. They'll purr when you pet them, and will watch TV with you/take naps with you whenever you want.
They require a lot of upkeep though, and also HUGE cages. Pet store cages are not big enough for them. You need to build your own. go to www.cavycages.com for more info. It's also cheaper to do this! But please don't buy a petstore cage. They're far too small for any guinea pig to live in. Hope this helps!

Guinea pigs are not your average small pet. they need big cages and you will get to learn a lot from them. They need social interaction by you and other guinea pigs (getting 2 will help with this). With a hamster or gerbil or even a mouse they sit in a small cage running in a wheel. ooo yay what fun! not! guinea pigs love to snuggle, you can line home made cages with colourful fleece, and have little guinea pig beds ( they loook alot like dog beds). These are some of the reasons I have 5 guinea pigs.

pros- they're pretty laid back so you can hold them for a long time in your lap, they dont take up much space(other than the large cage), theyre soft and fun to groom, and can be very affectionate.
cons- theyre super skittish and some dont get over it, theyre basically boring and dont do much of anything. I've had a few guinea pigs and i can only remember one having any real personality. You'll need a bigger cage because they need the room, and bigger cages are sometimes harder to clean, as well as a bit more expensive (more cage= more bedding)

Well if someone is trying to make you a guinea pig by getting one first, tell them to try it themselves first.

They really have to be in some form of cage and it bothers some people, including me, to cage things up. I was given a pair and let them roam my garden where they chose to live under a shed. In a short time we had twenty of them. They survived for about two years but foxes got the lot in the end. They were great pets and I enjoyed seeing them running about and happy but as far as the foxes were concerned they were food.

not a reason for not getting one but if decide to have one then get 2, they need company, or a rabbit, the 2 get on well...........if you decide to take the advice, make sure you are prepared to clean out regular, and give them lots of attention....rembering many people get these animals and forget them ...thus forcing them to live thier live in isolation..........my opinion, it is not fair to have a caged animal to satisfy yourself
