There is no right or wrong. You simply have to find a solution that both can mutually and enthusiastically embrace.

Place the DVD cases into an under the bed/ under the sofa or other out of the way storage box..
If your wife really likes the cases there is no reason to throw them out.. but I can understand the "dust catcher" and lack of storage space issue.. But I can also understand your wife liking the cases..
Be creative so you can both get what you want..
You want less stuff to catch dust and she wants the cases.. by using an under the bed/sofa storage box (usually under $15.00) you both get what you want and no one has to feel they are losing out...
By the way did you discuss the DVD storage system with your wife before you purchased it, or did you assume she wanted it without consultation?

What sort of DVD storage unit did you buy? If the system doesn't support the existing cases, I would likely ditch the cases, but file the index cards in the cases. I think perhaps she is thinking there is value to the items besides the DVD.

Keep the cases. If you have that many DVD's you are likely to have friends that will want to borrow them and the cases are the only protection you can provide. Besides, in the years to come, it might be nice to look through them, read the short descriptions, be reminded of who starred or produced them.
But more than any of these things, if your wife would like you to keep them, you should be willing to do so for her. You can always throw them out later. You will never be able to reclaim them. It might also give you an edge in the next disagreement to have this one under your belt.

You both are right here... Meet her halfway on this one... Let her keep and store some cases somewhere and you do what you want to too so that way you both are happy. Sometimes we have to a give a little you know. Buy a dvd holder that also holds the cases.

I think you are right. I was just thinking the same thing about my CD collection. If she must keep the cases you might as well go ahead and keep the DVDs in them. But my vote is for getting rid of them.

You should resolve now that your wife is always right. My wife hates to throw things away. When we met she even kept the good side of a bad pair of pantyhose for whenever another pair might be ruined on the opposite side. Tell your wife that all I had to do was buy a newer home with extra storage and 1500 extra square feet so we could store the stuff. My wife is happy and now I'm thinking our 3200 square foot house isn't really big enough....

You could buy one of those DVD storage cabinets that hold a ton.Keeps the dust off, they'll be out of the way, and you'll have extra room on top to put a pic or a plant.

I say get creative! Get your wife to pic out the best 100 to 150 cases and put them on a wall as a collage. This would look sweet! Now you both get what you want. Space and cases!

I say keep the cases if she wants to that much. If you truly love and respect her, keep them. She may resent you later if you don't when the cases with the DVDs intact inside them are worth something to your grandchildren or to the outside world monetarily.

If you ever want to sell (you can sell used dvds on ebay, half.com, etc) or give away the DVDs, you should keep the cases, otherwise, chuck 'em
However, if it will really cause a rift between you and your wife, save 'em...not worth fighting over...
