How do they have the right to tell me I have to wear a seatbelt? Or a motorcycle helmet. As an adult shouldn't I have the right to make my own decisions for things that affect only me? Do you think that slowly we are losing more and more of our free rights?

Yes. The government is supposed to be fearing us, not us fearing them.

You are free to choose to or not to wear seatbelts and helmets.

Your personal choices do affect other people. If you were to go out on a motorcycle without a helmet and die your family would grieve for you. Your irresponsiblity would affect other people.

Society is affected by people making irresponsible choices. The taxpayers end up paying medical bills of people who did not wear seatbelts or helmets. Insurance may not pay all related bills and the victims end up medically destitute.

I'd wear seatbelts whether there was a law or not. It is a matter of common sense. Some people have no common sense and that is why there is a law.

I don't want to pay for your foolishness and irresponsibility. That is why I support such laws. Fatal and crippling injuries are so easy to prevent.

YES, I believe we are losing our rights. HOWEVER, the poor guy (or gal) that's gotta clean your brains off the sidewalk suffers when you don't wear your seatbelt or your helmet. And the poor folks who use the same insurance company suffer when your decision to not operate your vehicles safely increases their premiums. And if someone hits and injures or kills you, they're NOT going to feel less guilty because you would've lived had you been wearing a seatbelt or helmet!

Note to libsr4kids: The Weimar Republic of Germany had a very limited government, too... Then Hitler got a hold of it, and slowly but surely took away every right they had, so subtly that hardly anyone noticed until it was too late to do anything about it. Even if your precious Republicans aren't doing it for evil reasons, they're leaving the door wide open for those who DO intend evil to follow.

Yes, it does appear that the government interferes more and more into our private lives. Seatbelt and helmet requirements are meant to protect people and keep them from dying in the event of an accident. Smoking bans are designed to protect everyone by providing a smoke-free environment. The government plays nurse maid to keep us safe and healthy, and save us from our worst enemies -- ourselves. I can understand your resentment because it does infringe on our right to self destruct. But examine the motives for the restrictions, and perhaps you will be less resentful.

What you are looking for is "anarchy" and that is just plain nonsense. You not wearing a helmet or seatbelt causes more injury accidents, which causes a greater need for emergency responders and also drives up insurance costs. Move to another country and see how restrictive they are and then come back and tell us about it.

Your wearing a seatbelt could affect others' lives or do you simply not care. Our government is a free government! Just try going to almost any other country and you will be honored to be an American!

People say free, but don't really mean it. In truth, we are free-er han many other places, but there are still laws. You have to wear a seatbelt because it has been proved to reduce the severity of injuries in accidents. You head trauma that can lead to lifelong care being required is very costly--to allof us who would have to support you for the rest of your life. Now--our government doesn't always make sense, but that's the idea.

We are sometimes too free!

We are free to vote for people that we maybe shouldn't have.
Then, they are free to get payed off by Police groups and insurance groups so one can make money and the other can save money!

Now, if only we were free to let said payed off Representatives know exactly how we felt about being sold out!

America is a free country. You are free to leave anytime you want to! No one will make you stay.

Think about being a citizen during communist Russia...no matter how much you want to leave the government will not allow you to leave. No amount of begging and crying will help you.

We have rules and regulations to make our society safer for everyone involved, including the people who whine about their "lack of freedom".
