Being a nation of greedy self-loathing individuals, I could'nt see a missing part as to why people can never accept themselves. This is a nation of constant change, when one adjusts to a specific lifestyle the world around us moves on and most people change with it, it may not be drastic but the subtle changes are the ones we notice most. Constant bombardment by the media of the new thing doesnt help much ether.

Because they don't *know* who they are. A person's best bet about "who I am" is most likely gleaned from parental input from, "How's my little darling..." to "Liar!" Me, for instance, I probably think that I'm pretty smart, that I should know better, that I'm selfish, that I oughta quit dreaming and get to work, that I'm a jealous sister, that I'm lazy, that I'm a brat, and that I have my head in the stars. None of this is likely to help me accept myself. I can pick and choose, and work up a pretty good image, but then I slip up and invite some feedback I'd rather not hear.
The mistake is that I'm Not all those things I've been told--good or bad. If I sit quietly and suspend judgement and desire, maybe I can see who in fact I truly am.

One Word: Insecure
As a human, everyone NEEDS to feel accepted. If you don't then you decide to change. What most people don't realize is that they are already accepted but they see what they "want" to be so they think they aren't and they change. They feel like they need to "be" something/someone else so they can be accepted and be important. They think they need to be "normal" but being "normal" is COMPLETELY impossible because we are all different. No one can set a standard for "normal" because no one is.
"We are all the same because we are all different"
The sooner a person learns this then the better off they will be. Everyone goes through a stage where they aren't really being themself and no one can bring them out of that stage until they realize who they REALLY are.

I accept who I am. I have a problem with others who can't accept me as what I am. Put downs because I have different beliefs or lifstyle. Looks of disgust because I am not as well to do or dress differently. Too bad I don't fit in to your social status or economic status......I am less than you because I have a handi cap or was raised in poverty. The taunting and riducule I get because I am different than you. People walk by and don't even recoginize me as a human being, I don't need you as a friend, only to recognize me as a fellow human being...Because you were raised in a different environment and have better clothes etc., this makes you better than me and others less fortunate than you. I am supposed to accept your intolerance, and on and on and on............

Because man's sin nature creates in people a (spiritual) dissatisfaction which they try to address by better appearances, better jobs, and possession / enjoyment of material things. As long as the spiritual is not satisfied with the spiritual, dissatisfaction remains, and as long as dissatisfaction remains people cannot accept themselves " for who they are".
By the way, who are we?

I think because the media makes us feel inadequate. They tell us we should look a certain way, have certain things be in a certain position.
It just puts too much pressure on people, make them feel like they are not successful because they haven't lived up to a "certain" image.
Pretty sad really!
We need to be strong and tell ourselves that we don't need all these things to be a better person!!

What do you look like? We are taught from childhood that we can always be better, we can improve ourselves. Then we see these so called beautiful people, the rich and famous and we want to be like them. Thank the advertising agencies of this world. Thank the movie industry. Thank Playboy, People, US, the daily news papers, the beauty pageants, the fashion industry. Etc, etc, etc.

There is this tiny space in the mind that thirsts for incredible, impossibly radiant things. In most cases, the person's person is not that incredible, impossibly radiant thing in the rest of the mind.
This causes restlessness and, if progress is too slow, self-loathing as well.

It's sad, but people don't really like who they are it seems. No one is satisfied in the world. I think they've bought into the media's image of what they should be. It's a shame, but the media and entertainment drives what people think should be their personality and image.

Because they lack the self assurance! Some people don't know who they are. They spend their whole lives trying to figure out that million dollar question. It would be nice nice if it were that easy!
