My picks are John Paul Jones and John Entwistle. I'd say John Paul Jones 'cause he plays a mean organ in addition to the bass, but then again, have you heard that solo in "My Generation"? It's definately a tie.

Well, first of all, Paul McCartney really didn't like playing bass but at the time, that was required, so that sort of count's him out.

John Deacon and Bernard Edwards both have indicated that John Entwistle influenced them, so that sort of counts them out.

Chris Squire and Geddy Lee are both excellent bass players but their "in the box" styles are somewhat limiting.

Flea I'm not familiar enough to comment on.

And personally, I think, that within the structure of their music, John Entwistle's role with the Who, he had to accomplish more. His bass lines were typically more akin to lead riffs, and he was the first, that I'm aware of, to play chords with the bass, and he was the first to develop different thumbing techniques.

These "who was the best" questions are both highly subjective and extremely difficult to answer. But from a musicality stand point, John Entwistle had the most difficult job to accomplish, simply by virtue of the band he was in. When the drummer is the most reknown musician in the band, you know you are in trouble, as it were...

Paul McCartney! He was originally a guitar player, but took up the bass because Stu Sutcliffe left the group, I believe. And he didn't sulk about having to take the bass. Instead, he revolutionized the use of the instrument -- his innovative skills can be heard on countless Beatles songs, as well as solo. Without Paul McCartney's contributions to the bass, all of the other bass players mentioned in that list would be sorely lacking.

Well...i think all of them are good. They all have rythym and can hit notes so fast. Paul and John P. are the original classic rock bassists. Geddy is just plain insane on bass. John deacon....hmm....what ever happened to him. Flea is just a plain funkadelic freak on bass! Awesome dude though. Yeah, and i guess the rest are good i guess. The one person you are missing is Steve Harris.
