He has an old computer running windows 98 and Norton Internet security 2006 just slows down his computer far too much. Is there any software that will do an effective job without reducing the performance of his PC much? Thanks in advance for your suggestion.

Yes, for older computers I recommend NOD available here:

NOD is written almost entirely in pure assembler, which gives it a VERY light footprint yet is fast and effective. Good luck.

Absolutely. And some anti-virus programs will slow your computer down more than others. Norton is one of the worst. Some will say that running 2 or 3 free programs will keep your computers free from virus's. This may be true (doubtfully) but the programs themselves slow the system down as much as the virus would. I use Webroot Spysweeper with Antivirus. It does cost money but it is a reasonable price. Also it combines your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware into one program therefor using less resources. It also has one of the fastest and most thorough scans around along with on-access protection.

If his pc is slowing up like that, consider buying an external hard drive to keep your files on. You should leave about 30% of your hard drive FREE so that the computer does not have to work too hard to run open programs. You can also delete unused programs off of your system. AVG has a free anti virus. But Norton and McAfee are best.

use clamwin. It is open source, GPLed freeware from sourceforge. It will not slow down the computer because it does not have an realtime scanner. Like the antivirus programs of old days. You run it manually whenever you want to virus scan.

There are a few things that help on a slow pc
-use ccleaner regularly
-do not use IE7, use IE6 and firefox
-disable as many programs from startup as possible
-keep the system partition, the C drive with as much free space as possible

Yes, absolutely! Go download NOD32 at their website. It's a 30-day free trial after which you can purchase it for around $30 or so. I've used Norton and McAffee exclusively since about 1996 and now they're just so "top-heavy" I can't stand it! They really slowed my system down!
NOD32 hardly uses any system resources and they have the most perfect anti-virus track record 5 years running... I love it! Everyone I've turned on to it LOVES it as well!

My computer geek friend recommends Trend Micro. If you go to their website, you can run the software right from their website for free. It's called Housecall. It's not like one of these websites that lets you run a free scan but doesn't let you fix what you find. This one even allows you to repair what's found.

Norton AV 2006 is a HOG on resources - I ditched it for McAfee AV. That is not as bad. Check PC World site for more
