The earth makes one revolution (a year) around the sun in about 365 days and 6 hours. As 6 hours is 1/4 of a day, 4 years are required to make one full day because of the "extra time" saved from the revolution. Therefore, as 1/4 x 4=1, it adds up to the exact amount of time to make a day every 4 hears.

Leap years come about mainly due to a technicality in the number of days in a year. Technically, a year consists of 365 days and 6 hours. Therefore, every four years, an extra day is added to account for the extra twenty-four hours that have accumulated.

because a "year" is 365 1/4 days. So at the end of four years, we add the 1/4 days to get an extra day

Because it's a leap year. The earth's rotation around the sun is not exactly 365 days, so every 4 years we need to add a day to set things right.
