What makes you think your child has an above average IQ? I'm a teacher. Most parents are in such denial about their child's intelligence. I've had the parents of Spec. Ed students repeatedly tell me how brilliant their child is. I have children in the AP classes... their parents are convinced they should skip a grade. They are convinced their child is above average. Truth is... few are. Do you have a happy, healthy child? Then thank your lucky stars and ........SHUT UP !!! Just let your child make his discoveries without reading far too much into it. If he can form four syllable words by age three... so what? So can thousands of other three year olds. He can do fractions at age five.... no big stretch. The Japanese are far ahead of your child.

Keep the TV off! --- except for things of value, such as nature shows, etc.
Read to your child-- from a very early age. Expose him/her to good music, art, nature, only healthy natural (organic, no GMO's, vegetarian) foods.
If possible, do not put her/him into a preschool, but let her stay with her parents or loving family members who will interact with her and hold her and stimulate her lovingly. If possible, home school him, so you can proceed at his rate of development with appropriate lessons--- and with a teacher who adores him!
Talk to your child all day--- about whatever you are doing, why, etc.... like if you are gardening, tell him about compost, and plants, etc. Much more will absorb than you think.
Never lie to your child---If you want to tell him stories (which are fine!) be sure to explain that this is a 'made-up' or 'just pretend' story...That way your child will always fully trust you.
Enjoy every minute with your child--- let him/her feel your love! Even if your child is actually no more than 'average' in intelligence, he is still absolutely brilliant and deserves the very best life in the entire world!

My son literally has an above average IQ. Tested and everything. But that doesn't mean anything. He still has trouble sitting down and "filling the form/rubric" at his school. He aches to just run around and play, not sit at a desk. Maybe it will come handy in the adult world. Maybe it won't. I know at leat two unemployed, depressed Mensa people. Pray for Well Rounded and Happy.

I think everyone considers their child as having an above average IQ. The best thing you can do is to read to your child. Even when they are an infant. Do it everyday.

Buy books. Get books from the library. Turn off the TV. Control Internet use, otherwise the kid will become a Yahoo! Answers addict and the IQ will be wiped out overnight...

Check schools out thoroughly when the time comes. A poor choice of school may be a detriment to your child.
I was a gifted child and went to a country public school. I didn't get the extra support I needed and quickly fell back to the same level as the other children.

Never talked "baby talk" to him. Read to him, listened to all kinds of music. Tried to help him develope any interests he had,ie, sports, writing, mathematics. Checked with his teachers as far as "moving him up" (meaning if he was reading at 3rd grade level in 1st grade, move him up in that subject, not skip the whole grade) in subjects he excelled in to keep him from becoming bored.
