I have a bunch of second-hand baby and toddler toys that are stuffed but that have battery-operated parts which can't be removed without permanently disabling them. I want to clean/disinfect them thoroughly and without toxins for my grandson. Any good methods?

I am not sure my way is most toxin free, but it is probably one of the best from that view and the experienced electronics view of not harming the working components:

1. Have wet vacuum cleaner (one that sucks up water) handy
2. Spray toy with Woolite Carpet Cleaning Foam and let set for a minute or two, you can scrub badly soiled parts with brush, using more foam.
3. Vacuum entire surface of toy, longer on areas with more foam.
4. Using a clean heavy wash cloth wrung slightly from bucket of clean warm water, wipe down entire surface of toy. Wipe down heavily foamed areas with freshly rinsed warm water wash cloth.
5. Important Step: Use wet vac with clean nozzle to remove all remaining moisture insofar as possible.
6. Hang toy on line in heated room to dry. DO NOT place it in a clothes dryer. Give it one or two weeks to dry if it is very large, thus drying slowly.

Important to make sure toy is thoroughly dry inside and out before storing them all together in plastic bags or something like that, or they might mildew.

This should get your toys clean without harming electronics. If they were really germy and dirty you could spray them with that Lysol disinfectant spray that smells like fresh linen (or equivalent) and that will also retard mildew while drying.

I recommend the Lysol Spray if you live in a hot and humid climate.

Warning: Do not use a regular vacuum cleaner for this work, you will ruin the vacuum cleaner, possibly create a shock hazard or cause the motor to throw sparks and smoke.....

When toys are dry you can fluff them up with a clean brush. A hair dryer can speed up the ones you need done in a hurry.

Good toys can be recycled to bring pleasure to some other child. Toys in a nursery school should be cleaned like this at least once every three months.

Don't let your child play in those fast food drive-in playhouses, they are full of germs and almost never cleaned.

Some few of them may get it right and post a sign stating when last cleaned, should be less than one month ago.
