Yes they should be washed, starches and other chemicals used in the manufacturing of clothes can be irritating to a newborn's skin. I use All free and clear, there a special 'baby detergents' but any detergent that is dye and fragrance free should be fine. The risks are that a baby may be sensitive to above mentioned chemicals/starches and dyes and fragrances in detergents. This can cause rashes or respitory distress due to allergies. After a couple months try a regular detergent, if the baby doesn't react, no problem.
As far as always washing new/used clothes before they are worn, I don't wear clothes without washing them first myself.

Let's not think of the chemical etc that might be there without you doing a first wash prior to wearing.
Let's just think of the followings:
Baby skin is very sensitive (would you bear to risk your baby?)
When in the factory, the cloths are simply thrown here/there and anyhow placed.
How dirty do you think the factory will be? Dusty etc?
With all the above questions i put up, Please ask yourself if you want to wash those clothes..
And how long you think is reasonable for you to keep washing till it's "ok" to let them wear without washing first.
This may be Yahoo Answers, but perhaps asking you back the questions will help your get your own answers

Yes, yes, yes!!! There are all sorts of chemicals on fabrics to make them look so great when the clothes are new. Babies have sensitive skin and it is very important to wash all the clothes in a baby detergent before they wear them. Plus, you never know who has been touching that stuff in the factory or store!! Not doing so could result in a nasty rash, or skin infection and I would wash their new clothes until about 1 year or so.

I think a lot of clothing manufacturers even state that the clothes are washed before worn because of all the chemicals in it. That clothes for all clothes, but I always wash my daughter's clothes before letting her wear them.

;yes. The colour in cloth is fixed in place by dipping the cloth in formaldehyde. This locks the dye into the fabric, but it also leaves a residue of formaldhyde in the fabric. Washing the fabric removes the formaldeyde. Formaldehyde can sensitize the infant, and result in allergic reacations later in life.

Yes, you should wash them before they are worn since some clothes have dyes and you do not want them to irritate your baby's skin. I would say wash them before hand until they are about age one or whenever you feel comfortable.

Yes wash your child clothes before they are worn usually the #1 pediatrics recommended is "dreft" target always has it. once they are 6 months old use half dreft half your detergent until around 8 months you can switch. The reason is because adult detergent has harsh chemicals used to fragrance your detergent which usually will irritate your child skin. like dry patches, skin irritations, ittching, redness etc...

yes you should pre-wash clothes. They have dyes that need to be pre-washed before being worn. You don't have to buy dreft though there is Purex for babies that is 1/3 the cost and all for babies that is half the cost of dreft

You should always wash all new baby clothing before allowing your baby to wear it. Considering you don't know where it's been or how long it's been there it would be a good idea.
I wash all my clothes for everyone in my house, including myself, before I wear them. God only knows who else tried them on. People aren't as hygenic as they should be.
