Because the foundation of American public schools (actually, America in general) was based on Christianity. Also, children need to be educated about math, reading etc, but religion teaches aspects of spirituality that nourishes your soul.

The teaching ABOUT religion in schools (note - not teaching to believe a religion) is practiced in many public schools. This exposes students to more facts and eliminates fear, rumor and a lot of misinformation about other religions. It helps students understand diversity on a higher level and teaches respect for values of another culture. It also explains the reasons for most of our world's wars.

Practicing religious values in public schools can make for better citizenship, less violence or crime on a campus, build stronger communities and help students identify with others who share their values. It can also give students purpose, when our society often neglects to nurture that in our children.

it teaches that there is an ultimate "higher" power that sees everything---knowing that there is a higher power that see everything helps people keep themselves in check. Prayer before school, not those who don't believe now, but all of them that report to that particular room, teaches fellowship with everyone, not a select few. If the country uses "In God We Trust" on all of their money and then bans it from the schools, it sends a mixed message. Unmix the message, PLZ

I can't be a bad thing to learn about other religions in a respectful way .it teachs tolerance and understanding. depending on how in depth the teachings are and for what age groups, religious teachings in a historical context, can provide an understanding of world events. (both positive and negative) with out the element of hate.

Their aren't any pros to this argument. People all have different religions and if they want to learn about god they will go to their church or synagogue or whatever. Many of these religious lessons that people think should be taught in public school should be left up to parents.

Religions address basic life questions. Learning how different religions have addressed those questions forces a student to face those questions him/herself. Obviously such a study would have to be done with extreme objectivity and would have to be careful to cover all major religions. Areas of comparison could be each religion's position on:
the origin of life
the nature of God
an explanation for man's propensity toward "evil"
its view of an afterlife
its view of 'God's' intervention in history
How does 'God' make himself known to humans

Such a study would be very enlightening to public school students.

We spend the day focusing on our mental and physical sides and tend to forget that people are three-fold beings that have a spiritual side as well. Helping children work on their spirituality might benefit them as a whole.
