If the piercing has been in existence for a long time, it may take months for them to grow over; it just depends on the person. If they haven't been pierced for long, they'll close up more quickly.
If it's a new piercing, then don't remove the starter earring for at least six weeks (some say eight); clean the area with alcohol or peroxide every day, and be sure to turn the piercing stud to keep it from adhering as the area heals.

Its going to take about 6-8 weeks. You must always use the alcohol for infection. After 8 weeks take out your earring over night if the back skin has gone over a bit then try another week it should be ok after that. Ive have mine for 20 years or so and sometimes the skin still comes back if i don't wear earrings for a week of so.

It takes about 6 weeks. that's if you don't get them infected, if you do, it could take months. To prevent an infection, wash them regularly and turn them. And don't worry. It takes about two days for newly pierced ears to close up.
