Do you think modern women would take issue with female values/roles espoused by this story?

Anyone can take issue with anything. That only means that different people have different opinions, which is fine.The values espoused by any religious text, however, are always good, regardless of the religion. Only a religious fanatic would say that the values espoused by a certain religious text are undesirable and/or bad/evil because they don't agree with his/her personal system of values.

In my opinion a lot of the values are very good such as chastity and gentleness (modern society could learn a lot from Ramayan in that sense) but to enforce them would be un-realistic. If women are to wholeheartedly inbibe such values, and not get exploited in the process, the men in society would also have to be of an equaly high moral calibre...just like Lord Ramachandra.
