The "Barbarians" (A Derogatory term from Ancient Greek) ARE the Europeans -so they didn't "invade" - the exception is the "civilised" Mediterranean cultures like Rome and the Hellenic city states.

Well, the barbarians you are referring to didnt invade anybody- they were always there. This term is just applied to ppl who lived outside of the ultra-dominant Roman civilization.

In this context, there were several waves of barbarian attacks on Roman land, starting from 200 BC all the way through 500 AD. It is toward the latter end that continuous pounding by indigenous tribal groups like the Goths, Vandals, Gauls, other Germanic tribes broke apart the infrastructure of Rome and started the creation of what we know now as the modern European nations.
