I would definitely get an external mouse. The keyboard....I wouldn't bother. That's pretty big to lug around. I use a small Targus usb mouse. A lot of people use wireless mice, but then you have to worry about batteries. Did I mention my mouse has a retractable cord? Here's a link if your interested:

The mouse pad is typically a replaceable palm rest unit. Anything that you use can go bad, nothing lasts forever. Of the notebooks I've serviced that are a few years old, none of them have ever had a bad mouse pad.
If you decide to go with an external mouse and keyboard for ergonomic reasons, check into port replicator options. This way you can connect an external display also. Depending on the notebook you can either get an intergrated docking solution or a USB port replicator solution.
This way you only have to either undock or unplug one wire.

I guess any mouse will do... I have a Dell Inspiron 640m with my dad's old Dell Dimension 3000 USB mouse... he bought a wireless Centrios one, and his old Dell one does the job. If you hate wires, though, you should go wireless. I just use the keyboard on my laptop, saves space, and I like the typing on it, as you don't have to press the keys so hard. I also have a Targus wireless mouse, and now I just need some AAA batteries for it...

Apart from that, it is convenient sometimes to be able to move cursor from a distance without having to reach the touchpad. I use a optical mouse (with a cord) , I heard cordless mouse battery needs to be replaced often. I do not use external keyborad, if you want to , get one with cord, cordless ones have issues.
