Why is the Bittorrent Protocol so slow even when downloading from 30+ peers?

The protocol isn't slow. It's just that the 30+ peers that you're downloading from may not be fast. Each of them can be very slow, either because they are bandwidth constrained or because they're trying to service many, many peers. Popular files and popular servers are going to always be slow because of this.
