You should go to your local shelter and talk to the volunteers. They are usually very friendly and willing to help. How do I know? I'm a shelter volunteer.
As I sit here, I'm still in my dirty clothes that smell like puppy. Becoming a shelter volunteer was the best decision I ever made. I've been volunteering for 6 months now, ever since I turned 16 and was old enough.
It's definately hard. Sometimes you have to be there and watch a dog walk into a room where you know it will never come out. You have to deal with stupid, ignorant people who have no idea what they want or what they're doing.
You also get to work with some of the wonderful people that work at shelters. I've got to know alot of them really well. I've also learned so much about animals, it's amazing.
The best thing a member of the public can say to a volunteer is, "I'm looking for a dog (cat, rabbit, etc.) I don't really want a puppy, I'm looking for a more mature dog, which ones do you reccomend?"
It's amazing when you get to show people your favorites, yes, you try not to have favorites, but it's unavoidable.
It is a truly incredible feeling to be able to give an animal a new home, a second chance.
As for the ones who don't get adopted, hopefully you've made their last few days a little better, a little brighter.
There are too many animals and too little space for the actual workers to do much with the animals outside of feeding them and cleaning cages.
It is up to the volunteers to give them the necessary extra attention, treats, petting, time outside of their crowded kennels, etc.
Good luck on your paper.
Look into volunteering yourself, and your 10 year old, once they're old enough. It's a great experience, and you learn so much.
Here are some links you might find helpful.

Why not contact your local animal shelter and ask them about their volunteer program? Our shelter uses volunteers to help walk dogs, socialize kittens, do laundry (lots of dog bed washing) and work at our thrift store. Some shelters train volunteers to help with adoptions and clean kennels. Each shelter is different.

Why not go to a shelter and volunteer for a day or a few hours. The experience would be good for her and I'm sure the animals would love it. Who knows, she might wan't to become a vet!!!
