I hope you don't mind but I don't think PE should be mandatory. My kids would say...back in the day when I was in school PE was just one of the options. You had a choice of Band, PE, or JROTC. You had to have at least one credit in one of those..of course it took 4 years to get one whole credit. But you were doing something physically active to challenge your body as well as your mind.

Today in the school system here, you are required to take PE and you are also required to have at least 3-5 hours a week of physical activity. Supposedly this is the new state law. You can sign up for a class to provide you with this if you already don't have some type of sport, gym membership...which the gym has to sign saying you are an active member, or your parent's can sign off on it saying you mow the yard so much and walk so much or jog...workout somehow for those hours. This is pushing it kind of far. I agree, kids don't get outside and play like they did...back in the day, but they are forcing the kids to really hate physical activity by making it a requirement.

Kids that start playing sports and/or getting regular exercise at a young age are more likely to stick with it into their adulthood.

It also raises their heartrates and gets more blood flowing to their brains so they can learn better.

It will teach them the rules so they know how to play any sports that they decide to pick up on their own.

Most parents are busier than they were 20 years ago and don't have time to teach the kids sports and fitness.

It teaches them teamwork and how to work together to achieve a common goal.

Even if they're not overweight it improves their circulatory systems and increases bone density.

They are less likely to drown later in life if they learned how to swim in the school pool.

With cable TV, X-box, the computer and gameboy, etc. kids are less active now than they're ever been. Eliminating PE will only further excaberate that problem.

Sometimes PE is the only physical activities that children get. Specially in Grade school, before the sports programs are offered. Parents Rely on T.V. to babysitt children these days. PE is only an hour a day, and usually fun. or it was for me when I was in School. I think PE is great!

Kids, especially young kids, have a lot of pent up energy and it makes it difficult for them to sit still and concetrate. PE class allows kids to burn off some of that pemt up energy and allows them to sit down and concentrate and be better focused.

Additionally, endorphins are generated by exercise which keeps all people, especially children, in better moods.

Additionally, PE can teach kids team sports and the value of working with and as a part of a team which is a beneficial skill to have in life

okay, you said not to say because people are lazy and overweight......but of course, if they're lazy and overweight as kids, they will turn into obese adults. Just look at the numbers across America. It's frightening.

PE in school being a mandatory thing teaches kids a new lifestyle....how to effectively weight train and exercise, so that they will continue to do so in their adult years. :)

At its most basic level spotting --Health problems. It gives the education system a chance to monitor children enough to observe if there is a health problem. Breathing, (asthma) Bone, (arthritis), and yes weight problems that could result in diabetes etc., in fact probably just about any known common diseases from a to z. At a more advanced level--spotting athletes. We live in a world where people that are above average, even talented in Athletics, can have happy successful careers as Athletes. Then there is even more basic reasons. Some children are raised in an environment where the parents either do not feel comfortable, or cannot discuss critical health education issues with their children. They rely on the educational system to provide this NECESSARY EDUCATION.
