American Football was not very different from from the Rugby League at the start, they just added a new first down if you advanced 10 yards. A lot has changed since then and American football evolved a lot, especially in the first 10-20 years of the game.

Rugby is great game, and American Football is a great game, they are different and similar is so many ways.

You really can't compare the players from one sport like rugby to the players to another like American football because the athletes have excelled based on the rules of that game. A great American Football team playing against a great Rugby Team in American Football would win hands down, and if both played Rugby , the rugby team would win hands down. American Football players are Much bigger than the Rugby players on average, especially the linemen, but rugby players have to pay for 80 Min's, without timeouts, only 6 substitutes per game, and the game does not stop when someone is tackled. You basically have to be able to run a marathon in cleats get tackled every 5 minutes. 99% of American Football player would not last til half time, from the constant running with limited stoppages.
