You need to have some self respect. Realize that being clingy means that you need affirmation from another person. Love and respect yourself above all, and then you won't need the approval of anyone else.

Develop interests of your own and be more independent. Clingy equals needy and is a turn off.

Let GO! Find your own interests. Let the other person reach out for YOU sometimes. Develop hobbies, take a class, research stuff online, READ. Know that you are fine as you are.

Remember that your mate liked you for you. You need to stay true to yourself and have your own hobbies and things you do for fun. Then do them by yourself or with friends. Everyone needs some alone time or time with friends.
