I recently purchased the book since I also saw the new version of the movie a few days ago and I was just wondering anyone's opinions over the film and the book.

P&P was not my first Austen read (Sense & Sensibility received that honor) and it is not my favorite (Persuasion wins that one). Having said that, it is an absolutely fabulous piece of literature, Austen was a genius. The fact that her education was so limited and she was still as prolific as she was, and wrote as well as she did, is astounding. Her characters are all well-developed, and the dialogue sharp and witty. I agree with everyone else - the BBC version is definitely worth watching, Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle embody Darcy and Elizabeth. The new version with Keira Knightley was pretty awful. If you have 5 hours to devote to a movie, it's worth it, although reading the book is always best.

If you're referring to the Keira Knightly movie version, I haven't seen it. I have heard from many die-hard fans of the book that this is not the best movie version to see. The A&E/BBC mini-series starring Jennifer Ehle(sp?) and Colin Firth is very good. Most fans of the book absolutely love this version, including myself.
As far as the book goes, it's a masterpiece. I love Jane Austen's style of writing. I've read and enjoyed all of her books and Pride and Prejudice is my favorite.

Uh yeah. It's definitely the most classically classical classic I've ever read in my life. It's an amazing story. One of the funny things my old teacher pointed out is that you can always tell when Lizzy's doing something stupid if she agrees with the mother or disagrees with Darcy or her dad. I think they're all super hotties. I mean, in a literary sense. I love their characters and it's an amazing novel. I would also recommend to you the butt long BBC version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. I like it better than the new film.

I absolutely LOVED the book and the movie. I feel that they did a good adaptation in the new film, they stayed very close to the story and it was cast perfectly!!!! If you haven't seen the BBC version i highly recommend it. it is 5 hours long though so make sure you have a free weekend.
God Bless!!!

I loved it. It was my first ride on the Jane Austen express. In the beginning of the book, it was slow going because I had to wrap my brain around the way they spoke. But once I got the hang of it, I would laugh myself silly over Elizabeth's caustic wit and her observations of English manners.

I've seen all 3 versions of the movie and they're all good. But the essence of the book does not carry over onto the big screen. Austen was one of a kind...

This is one of my favourite books and is my favourite of all of Jane Austen's novels. It is consistently ranked in the Top 10 favourite books here in Australia and somehow finds a fan base in each successive generation. Perhaps because it is about one of the " Universal Truths " , that we are all searching for our
" Darcy " or our " Elizabeth ". Each time you read the book, you are still on tenterhooks waiting to see if they finally get together and so relieved that they do.

it was one of the best books ever written....i think you'd enjoy the humor better if you know the era it is set in,i think it is the regency period...you know when ladies are supposed to be "ladies" with a capital L....all that fainting and swooning.Lizzy's exuberance comes as Austen's protest against the "typical" novels of the time...
the characters are superb and the humor witty....it's definitely a GREAT read....
i would recommend the bbc version too...it has kept the dialogues almost intact!
