I get it. My last book of dark haiku was emo. I used to cut, I'm emo. I'm old school emo. LOL

To sum it up simply, it's a style of music. But, similar to other "scenes", e.g. Punk, Goth or Rave, it can also entail a lifestyle and a look.
Emo is a current trend that first started in the early to mid 1990's. In it's beginning, the music was very similar to "Shoegazer" style, but today has become more theatrical and popular. In the early days, the main cliche of the look was a pair of dark framed, often large and square, glasses, a.k.a. "Emo Glasses." They can be either prescription or non.
Today, Emo has grown to mean a large portion of the Teenage population. Especially those are extremely sad or emotional. Which really is part of the teenage condition :), but is often more pronounced in these individuals. Other Emo trademarks are tight jeans, retro or dark sneakers (a favorite is black Chuck Taylor Converse All Stars), eyeliner (esp. males), facial piercings (particularly of the lip), dark hooded zip up sweatshirts and often time, gloves or glovelets.
The key element today, though, is the hair. Often in males it is overly coiffed. It is longer than the standard male cut, maybe 4-10 inches in length and styled generally with a flat iron and made to "flip." In girls, it is often dyed black or platinum blonde, or a combination of the two, and cut jaggedly and often with bangs.
Popular bands of the scene include:

-AFI
-Taking Back Sunday
- Green Day (only albums released after 2000)
- The Used
These are not the only Emo bands, just the most popular and overly exposed.

originally it was a form of rock that had to do with expressing raw emotion.
then it was taken into middle and high schools as a look, and in some cases a lifestyle- kind of like goth, but not so extreme.
now, anyone who is "emo" dresses in an "emo" way, and may be depressed/highly emotional often, or claim they cut their wrists-many times this is not actually true.
it is pretty much a look ,some people think it's cool, but its going out of style.
i would not say its a lifestyle-it is more of a false identity.

Emo is short for emotional. It's both a look and a lifestyle. Emo guys usually wear girl pants and band tees, and have long side swept bangs in the front. The girls have band tees and jeans/black pants with simaler bangs. Sometimes emo people have black square glasses, and blonde bangs with black hair. The realy emo people cut their wrists to hide their pain. The people who just go for the look are called FashionCore.

Hi, I am 30, I found out what that was about 2 yrs ago from my sons babysitter, she said that its the style some teenagers wear, if you see guys with tight pants on especially tight around the ankles, these people listen to emotional music, write poetry etc. But now I think people are using the term for anyone who is emotional.

emo is short for emotional. they usually wear really really tight pants (guys and girls) and dark clothes and always look depressed and sad and negative. sometimes they have wierd hair dos like havin it cut short with the front part swept forward over their face or forehead. and they listen to similar depressing, dark, degative music. i dont want to generalize, but speakin from the ones i know, this is usually the definition of emo

They are a bunch of weird pple who think the whole world is against them and revert to this dark world ie dark make up, clothes, hair etc and also self mutilation.

It's those kids who look like they're truly depressed (or emotional). They wear black, listen to dark music, etc.
It's a look and a lifestyle.
