I've been looking into studying or working abroad in Japan and one of my major concerns is how white American women are treated in Japan. I've heard that they are looked down on, especially by men. Is this true?

Don't worry, if you are not Japanese, they won't look down on you for your gender. However, Japanese women are expected to behave humble and modest in the sociery for sure.
Things have been changing though. It's getting more Americanized.

I think you need to have a good attitude before you are going to Japan. Seems to me that you have already looking for trouble by asked that kind of question with your own answer. I don't mean to put you down or anything, but to go to the other land you are going to need all the positive attitude you can get. I think people are the same everywhere. Some good and some bad. I couldn't imagine to say all American are good, or all are bad. Everyone have a unique own personality. Some man in Japan probably are jerks, just like everywhere else and here in the US, but you can't say they all the same. One thing you have to remember is, it takes a friend to have one, to gain a friend you have to be one. Always be nice and have a positive attitude toward the other people. Enjoy yourself in Japan. women are thought of as lower than men in most of the world.. Europe and USA are really the exceptions.. Japan is a lot better than most of the world about treating women as equals..
