No, dont lie in an interview. However, that question is illegal, and the manager knows it. Just look puzzled and say "Ive never been asked that question in an interview before. Is that a question you normally ask?"
That should get them behaving.
But if it seems the person is just friendly and you are getting along and just having a conversation, you can mention your kids.

A potential employer cannot ask you if you have children as it has nothing to do with the skills needed to perform the job. You do not have to disclose anything about your age, marital or family status in an interview. Questions pertaining to age, marital status or family status open the door for discrimination and any reputable interviewer will not ask. If they do ask you do not have to answer and you should let them know that you know it is discriminatory. You should only be asked about your skills and training that relate to the job and about your previous job experience.

An interviewer can ask you if you have any limitations for which they will need to make reasonable accomodations. This is so that if someone is disabled they can let the potential employer know that they will need specific items or consideration to perform the job. In other words, the interviewer will not say "do you have any disabilities we should know about?".

Good luck in your interview!

I believe it is actually illegal for them to ask you personal questions such as that.

Nevertheless, I have children and I have always let the employer know during interviews. I know that there will be times when the kids will be sick, emergencies will arise, etc. If the employer has a negative attitude about working moms, why would I even want to work for them?

Never, ever, under any circumstances lie during an interview. Get caught and you for sure will not get the job; get caught later and lose the job. If they ask you if you have kids, be honest and say that you have dependable care (if you do) and others who can step in if needed (if true) and you should breeze through.

You should be honest first and foremost of above everything! If you lie then when you and if you get the job then you might have to tell your employer that in fact that you do have kids. Then you will have to go through an embarrassing situation.

First ... you should never lie during an interview!!! Secondly....., the employer should not be asking you any personal questions..... it could have a negative impact on his decision to hire you.....and that is against the law ( discrimination) !!!!!!

Not a good idea to lie in an interview.

That said, that's not a legal question for them to ask in an interview.

Don't lie, but you also don't have to answer that question. Just say that your family will not interfere with your ability to work your scheduled shifts. It's like when they ask if you have a car, you don't have to answer that, but just assure them that you have a way to get to work. (Unless it's for work-payed insurance coverage, in which case you should tell the truth so your kids - if you have them - will be covered.)

If you lie on an employment application and then after you're hired, you could very well be fired. Who wants a PROVEN liar on their pay roll? (It happened when an assistant was hired to help me. He lied and 2 weeks later, his lie was discovered. I got a call to send him to personnel. I've never seen him again. Hmmmm what DID they do with him?)
