You have jumpers on the back of the Hard drive. A small white (usually) jumper connected to two rows of pins. This jumper can be connected to those pins in a variety of ways to tell the hard drive whether it is a master, or a slave. If the different positions are not labeled on your hard drive, then you need to go to the manufacturers website, or refer to the manual.

It is possible to confuse the computer if the jumper does not match which end of the hard drive data cable the hard drive is connected to. IF the jumper is selected to master, then it should be connected to the master end of the cable if it has two connections. (ide) and the same for slave. You can also, set the jumper to "cable select", and then the drive will operate as master or slave depending on which end of the cable you connect the hard drive to.

Not all hard drives jumper setting are identical, so be sure to use diagrams for your hard drive.

If you have it, use the manufacturers instructions. If you don't have it, then look on th drive itself for a small diagram with the letters-m-sl-cs. If its there, move the colored jumper to sl. If there is no diagram, then ya gotta do it through trial and error. That means, move the jumper to the middle slot/pin, attach cords, and turn on, if works cool, if not, move jumper to the next pin set.Make sure the drive is connected to the middle spot on the flat cord. If your cord doesn't have a middle connection, then none of this will work, because you will have to have it as a master on the other drive connection on motherboard. I'm assuming your drive is regular IDE, and not SATA. If so, it's a jumper move, and middle of flat cord. If you are trying a USB external drive, then it should be a jumper setting.

On the hard drive itself, there should be a diagram stating how to set the jumper settings to either slave or master.

Here's an example of how it should look: http://www.binarybiz.com/hddrepair/img/fujit-jumper-settings.gif

there is a small tiny plastic behind the hard disk, where the two connectors of cables are located. It is called a jumper and it decides that. On the hard disk you will see marking of the position of jumper, it is called jumper setting.
