12 x 2 = 24
8 x 3 = 24 (and 8-3=5, so there's your answer!)

Let the numbers be a and b
Therefore a-b=5 and ab=24
We know that (a+b)^2=(a-b)^2+4ab
=5^2+4X24
=25+96
=121
Hence a+b=11
Now from the two equations a+b=11 and a-b=5,we can easily find the values of a and b by once adding them and dividing the sum by 2 and subtracting them and dividing the result by 2
Thus,we find a=8 and b=3
Therefore,the numbers are 8 and 3.
Though the explanation took a lot of space, the calculation may be done easily mentally without the use of pen and paper

you're actually not likely to get a superb answer for this one. once you're making a equipment of equations with x-y=12 and x*y=17, you eventually finally end up getting some nasty irrational numbers... yet i assume in case you around on the tip it works all suitable. I have been given 1136 for the fee.
