I think you should get a hamster because they don't take up much space, are inexpensive and don't need a bath. I love hamsters. A hamster needs some TLC though. And when it comes to cleaning the cage... But other than that, they are great pets.

Ditto on the RAT!
Once you spend some time with them, you will see how the common misconceptions are so wrong!! I also enjoy the reactions that I get from people who don't know anything about rats and prove them wrong. ;-)
My favorite pets so far that I have had are rats! I have had cats, dogs, and ferrets in the past.
It's fun to make things for them to play with/in like cutting holes in boxes, making hammocks for the cage, pvc pipe tunnels... They usually will eat anything you give them - just feed them healthy food. Mine love to take treats and lick yummy things like coffee and juice from my fingers. They interact with you and are small enough that they don't need much space.
Just need to clean the cage at least weekly, usually good enough to change litter and bedding. I hose the cage down about once a month.
Need to be kept in pairs at least, as they are very sociable animals. Keep them in same sex pairs or you will get babies (lots and frequently). The younger you can get them(5-6 weeks), the better unless they have been well socialized.

I have a hamster, and their very easy to take care of.. but they need attention so if your willing to give it some attention and feed it treats and that stuff than it would be a good pet
