When you own a piece of property, the town/city hall will have a copy of a survey on file which will show you if your fence is on your porperty or on your neighbors.

Unfortunately you do not know without a survey. Without that you have no way of challenging errors. You could look at the registered deed and see if it references some sort of landmark or barb wire buried in an old oak or a boulder. This is common in New England but assume you live in a place without significant landmarks.

You might check the following web site and it might give you some ideas on how to determine to whom the fence belongs or at least maybe where you can get more information... It seemed to be about half way down the page...

This should be on your title dees. Failing this you will need to check with your local planning/records deptartment.
If all else fails, break it then see if your neighbour gets mad?

Why don't you ask the person you bought your property from? Or a neighbor...IF they are honest:)
Good Luck!!
