Well, a while ago during gym we were playing handball but on our knees. my knee started to swell and I couldn't bend it or walk on it. The pain was right under the knee cap. It was also red. I went to the doctor and he said I tore a ligament in my knee and told me to se an orthapidec. Also if i bend my knee it cracks every time. So the next day I went to the orthapidec and he took x-rays but not an MRI. He said I have Premature patella inflamation. He said just rest and there nothing he can do. How does he know if he didn't even take an MRI? Any suggestions?
Thx for ur time

Get a second opinion. The redness is usually inflammation, true (and you can take an anti-inflammatory for that if you're not allergic) but from what you described, it could be a problem with your ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or your meniscus (the c and o shaped cartilages that sit between your femur (thigh) and tibia (shin bone) to protect the two bones from hitting one another. It could be something as simple as a sprained ligament or strained muscle. If the physician does order for cortizone shots, you should receive no more than 3 in a 12 month period as they break down tissues over time with repeated use... they mask pain, not heal wounds. There are many manual manipulation tests that can be done to check for it (unfortunately you can't really do them on yourself) such as the anterior drawer, posterior drawer, click test, etc that help to ascertain what the nature of the injury is; plus other questions to ask. Does it lock out when you stand/sit at certain angles, what movements hurt the worst, exactly what position were you in when the pain began, etc. An MRI is the only true way to look at the muscles and ligaments. The x-ray is merely going to tell you if you broke a bone, not if any of the other things occurred. You could also see an orthopedic physician that specializes in sports medicine or athletic related injuries (there tend to be very few of them but they're worth it most of the time). Good luck to you. Until then, keep icing it and rest it. Use an ace wrap for the swelling and to help stabilize the joint. (RICE = rest, ice, compression, elevation. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

Orthopedics normally dont order an MRI when they know what the problem is. It really does sound like inflamation in your knee darlin. Try taking an anti-inflamatory such as aleve when youre having trbl, and if this dosent help, ask the ortho you went to about cortizone injections in your knee. These hurt for a cpl days afterwards, but after that they help tremendously!

sounds like you are dealing with buffoons, dear child...time to call an attorney and a different orthapedist and demand proper care and attention and an mri...and let your attorney make some threatening noises...works like a charm...
but you must now make waves and make trouble, or you will have trouble for the rest of your life with that knee...i speak from personal experience...so raise some hell with those clowns, this is YOUR knee and YOUR health on the line here.

The orthopod looks at joints for a living. He has probably seen thousands of knees in his career.
Just because you can look stuff up on webmd does not mean that you can second guess your doctor.
He likely saved you about a thousand bucks by not perscribing an MRI study for you.

the first doctor you went to is right. you have a torn ligament. you have to see another orthopedic doctor. MRI also is important because thru this you can examine the tissues perse.

To reduce pain and swelling (inflammation) get a cold compression knee wrap. http://www.coldoneinc.com/knee_wrap.html.

I think you need a second opinion by another orthopedist, just to make sure.
