In the early 1900's caffeine and cocaine was combined by a pharmacist in a carbonated drink to "refresh" you when you needed a pick me up and sold at drug stores (which also has soda fountains) for a nickle a glass. The drink was called Coca Cola. Same ingredient we know today, minus the cocaine.

The first soda was just carbonated water. After this, soda fountain drinks were patented by a man named Samuel Fanhestock.
I believe it was first called "soda pop".
