Methadone has a higher addiction rate and a more intense withdrawl, Ive not yet met anyone who has really been sucessful in kicking heroin by using it, it makes little sense replacing one addiction with another simply because one is legal. In the end you just have to withdraw from both drugs which seems fairly pointless. Good luck either way!

Well, methadone is monitored by a physician, which is important in reducing any withdrawal symptoms. The doctor will wean them off the methadone at a slow enough rate so as not to cause that problem.

The only problem is that for some people who are addicted to opioids, the withdrawal symptoms may very well be enough to make them think twice the next time they're tempted to start using again.

If the ultimate goal is to get off smack, its all good. You don't want to trade one addiction for another.
