It's a typical bathtub in a 25 year old house. I have a couple of dark rust spots - about the size of a pencil eraser right at the drain. Can I kill it or am I looking at a new tub?

Baking soda and Vinegar, as a natural alternative. Sprinkle on the baking soda first then pour vinegar on it. It will foam up. Let it sit there awhile then use a kitchen scouring (non-abrasive) pad.

Id say you are out of luck on repairing things. What has happened is the porcelean from the cast iron or steel tub is gone from the surface and exposed is the iron from the tub itself.

A temporary fix might be to clean that area thoroughly with a kitchen abrasive. Then take a clear Polurethane adhesive ( you can buy that in a squeeze bottle at Lowes ) and apply a thin coat wiping it nearly off with a clean rag to the damage area only . Once that has set up and cured ( remember water is needed to cure a urethane) apply about 2 more sucessive coats of urethane to that area to seal up the tub in that location. If properly applied that stuff lasts for a year or two.

If you should decide on a new tub, you can get a specialist to come out and make a liner for that existing tub from acrylic material. Those work well but are costly in my opinion for what you get.

Good Luck

they don't seem coming from the drain or the tap. they are merely contained in the tap to get water. you want to get some ant bait stations that contain a poison that they convey decrease back to the nest and in case you employ it in accordance to instructions it is going to kill the finished colony. that's the in user-friendly words way you'll get rid of them. you may poison and spray interior your position till you're blue contained in the face and there are continuously extra ants outdoors to take the position of those you kill.
