well, you could say im ALMOST one of those straight A students, but here my current plan...

1)Get at least 2 A's and 1 B in A2 (chemistry,maths,physics), and a B in AS biology.
2)apply for a top uni, that has minimum requirements of AAB in A2, plus the B in AS, and try for chemical biology (4 year degree course).
3) Get a '1st' in my degree.
4) then apply for medical school, which wants a '1st' class degree. in which 900 people apply- for only 164 places. this includes an extra test to get in-which examines more than just knowledge.
5) come out of medical school- ready for a decent, well-paid job.

what you guys think of my chances ? :D

Hi, if you really want to get to Medical School, you will put all your effort into it, it's a tough world out there, my son who has severe eye problems wanted to do Secondary Teaching in Science but cos of not being able to see the back of a classroom he has had to opt for Primary, he started at Lancaster in September of 2005 on the understanding he would be doing Secondary, but just before the Christmas break of that year got told he couldn't do it,so when they went back in the January 2006 hewent into the Primary & had to do two terms in one which he has passed by putting in some very long hours studying and hard work, Go for it is all i can say & good luck for the future

I went to an open day for medicine at UCL and they said they had taken students with three C's at A-level if they could show good commitment to the medical/health area outside of their academic work i.e. St John's Ambulance etc. It isn't just about academic work anymore, most uni's want good work experience as well to reflect their dedication to the field. Uni's get many AAAA students who are doing medicine because they can and it because it pays well, rather than because they WANT to.
If you really want to go to med school you'll get there somehow, although doing 4 years on top of another 5 will be VERY tiring; some divisions of medicine such as psychiatry can then take another 5-10 years to qualify in, which might be something to consider. I think if you could get in there after your A-levels it would be good, and there seems no reason why you can't!!

[The test you refer to is called GAMSAT]

This is a great plan, but this takes a long time. Try a Uni that might take you into Medicine straight and once you finish in 5 years, you can specialise in a area later. The well paid are always constants, who get there on experience and specialisation.

Any chance of applying for medical school direct? If they see how keen you are at the interview I'm sure you'll get in on AAB

Hi M H,

A great plan, I hope you achieve everything you want. It will be a great deal of work so take it a stage at a time. Keep your aims and goals achievable and realistic. They may change during the next few years.

Very best of luck.

sounds like you have as good a chance as those undertaking the same course as yourself. you come across as being pretty confident. you seem to have a target and you intend on reaching it, sounds like though you have a plan. as long as you don't get over-confident and focus on your studies, then you should be able to concerntrate, focus and work hard and as well as you should do. good luck by the way!

A long way to go, but I guess it depends on how much you want it.
I say go at it and do as well as you can.
