i want to transfer files, how do i do that.. i know that you do
\\server\sharename, but how do i find the family computers server name??

you'd drop to an cmd prompt... type "ipconfig"... then enter in that IP address, ie, \\123.123.123.123 in the start - run section.

Make sure that all computers involved have file and printer sharing enabled in their firewalls! This one little thing is the single biggest reason why people can't network.

Use the network 'peer to peer'. Each connected computer becomes a server as well. Just make sure all computers use the same work group name.

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double click System. Goto the Computer Name tab.

open up windows explorer...look in network places...click on your network..a list of all computers in your local network should appear. click on the other computer, a list of shared files/drives should appear...if you don't see that, go to the other computer and enable file sharing on the folder you want to share.
