I was born in a tiny village in Shropshire, England in January 1947. The village consisted of ten houses, a church, and a Post Office/ Telephone Exchange. It was 5 miles from the nearest town. That Winter was the worst on record and the snowdrifts were 7 feet deep. There was no telephone and few people owned cars in those days. Even so it would have been impossible for a vehicle to get through the snow. The village was cut off. I was born naturally in the upstairs bedroom, assisted by a couple of aunts with whom we were staying at the time probably with lots of hot water and torn bedsheets like in the old films. My father and uncle were banished downstairs. The aunts didn't know really what to do but knew enough to cut the umbilical cord and tie a knot around it. I was eventually taken to hospital some days later. That was January 26th 1947 and I'm 60 years old on Friday. Very few people can say they were born in that village so I'm pretty unique.
