Thought I already answered this one but here goes. A wake is visititation or viewing of a dead person. It is where you go to the funeral home to pay your last respects to a dead person and to greet the family and offer condolences.

This is like a viewing of a dead body, right before the burial of the body. Family and friends can give their condolences, to either the spouse of the deceased, or the children. Then they look at the body in the casket. Also food is provided for the family, and friends who might of traveled far to see the deceased.
Many cultures call this a viewing, at least where I come from.
These wakes are either at the deceased home, or at the funeral home.

A wake in the catholic world is when family and friends come to view the body of a person who has recently passed. Normally it is an open casket where the dead person is on display for people to come say goodbye to and say a prayer over. These can typically last for up to three days with the final day being the day of burial.

A long time ago when I was much younger the body would be
at the house and the family and friends would stay awake all night
with the body. Don't ask me why because I don't know unless
it had to do with the way the funeral homes did things. They
came to the house and put a white wreath on the front door
and sometimes brought some seats and the people stayed until the next day.

the wakes i went to have a party like atmosphere
there was plenty of food and booze
i overindulged in both and sometimes made a fool of myself
really these affairs are for the mourners but in the Philippines where my wife is they have the above mentioned goodies plus they gamble on different games of chance to help pay for the funerals..also donations are expected. ALMS!
I don't gamble but I do eat and drink my share and tell the people something that sounds like in English...I lack a quarters...or I lack a pear-ah! then i roll my eyes and bow my head and get the hell out of their house after if they could give me money for a jeepney?

Unlike a funeral, a wake can be either open or closed casket. You pay your respect to the deceased and/or their family members.A funeral is more like a eulogy usually/always) closed casket.Hope this helps.

Along with being a viewing for a deceased person...it is what occurs behind a boat when water is displaced.
