All the answers above are good. Some other attractions in Edinburgh:

If you're old enough and have the interest, I'd also suggest the Scottish Whisky Heritage Center. Very interesting tour and information, plus a complimentary dram and one of the best whisky bars I've ever been to. Just outside the gate to Edinburgh Castle.

Also, look around for the Edinburgh Ghost Tours. You'll get some very interesting history of the city, see some parts of it you wouldn't expect, and be very entertained. And who knows, you may get some photos you can't quite explain.... ;)

The Deacon Brodie Tavern is a good place for lunch or a drink later on. It's named after the inspiration for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

All these attractions are on the Royal Mile somewhere.

There's loads of lovely parts of edinburgh...

• climb up Arthur's Seat and you get a great view of the whole city and beyond (takes about 30 mins to walk up.)
• Holyrood Palace at the bottom of the Royal Mile, then onto the Scottish Parliament
• Dynamic Earth - it's a smart geo-museum type place
• The castle of course!
• The Water of Leith
• Princes St Gardens
...there's loads, depends on what you're into.

The Royal Mile is a great street right at the heart of the city. I'd recommend going on a ghost or witchery tour with one of the guides one night – they take you into the deepest darkest old streets underneath the new buildings and tell you stories of what went on in times gone by...

if you're into shopping, go along George St in the New Town where's the plenty of nice shops if you've got nice money.

August is the best time to come, when the festival is on the place goes bonkers. Either then or at Christmas but if you're here right now and on holiday, sorry the weather's so bad!! :)

Visited there 2 months ago. Brilliant place.
If you are in a car, you must do the circular drive around Arthurs Seat on the edge of the city. Excellent views all the way round. Also Calton Hill at the end of Princess Street: drive to the top, again for excellent views. Another gem was the grounds (and inside) of the Scottish National portrait Gallery - about 5 mins NW of Princess St. Finally, the view at night from the Esplanade just inside The Castle. PS I'm a Scot living in England, and all these suggestions are FREE !

The Castle obviously, the Royal Mile is a good touristy road with a few museums & old preserved houses, that sort of thing. (It's one of the roads leading up to the Castle.)
Shopping is good there too.
There's camera obscura, although I haven't been there since I was about 10!
The best time to go is in the summer when the Edinburgh Festival is on, then there are LOADS of shows, street acts, events, fairs, markets, etc etc.

If you are a scenery fan, head up to "Arthurs seat" for breathtaking panoramic views.
If you are a beer fan, try Rose street, I don't think you can walk five paces along the road without coming accross a pub!
