In France, it is mandatory that all vehicles have "fog lamps". These are AMBER, not white.
The yellow light cuts better through the fog.
For some reason, North American cars have "white" fog lamps, and they are far too bright for my liking.
I live in Alberta Canada, land of the pickup truck. Many of these new trucks have a lower set of bright white lights apparently to light up the road at a lower level (so, why I ask do these people jack UP their trucks so high?).....
I think that these people using their "fog lights" are just unaware that they are on, or they think they are more visible, or perhaps they have poor "night vision" and need the extra light.
They might also feel that they are "cool" however..........anyway, that's my opinion....

When fog rolls at you while driving. Low lights see further because fog reflection is less at that position. Try this sometime, drive along with your lights on low beam in fog. Try the high beams you'll see that your headlights simply reflect the fog without lighting through it.

guitpicker is right. in many places where theres usually no fog people buy car with the foglight option or install them on those awesome pickups or SUVs. why? its makes the truck look tougher, its like puting neon underlights on a tuner car. it just looks cool.
