You have to cite Count Rumford in wikipedia, an American named Thompson (I do not remember if his name was Benjamin), who was ennobled by the Holy Roman Emperor in the 18th Century for his services. The friction energy heats the metal. Count Rumford was in charge of a cannon factory. In those days, they cast cylinders of bronze, then used a drill to bore the hole in the barrel. One day, Count Rumford ordered a bronze blank to be immersed in water and a dull drill bit used to bore it. The heat generated boiled the water. Count Rumford is celebrated as the first person to show that mechanical energy is related to heat energy. Count Rumford also reformed the army and the civil service of the kingdom of Bavaria.

Metals get hot when they are machined because they are a good conductor of heat and electricity so therefore when they are heated the metal will conduct that heat and get hot itself
