The region was called New England by the English immigrants when they were still colonies.

The people who founded the area were from England. So this is NEW England. . .

Because "Other England" didn't sound right.
And at the time "Next England" was taken.

Because the pilgrims came from England, so they named their new home "New" England. I guess it made them feel more at home.
