If you are talking about funerals, a WAKE is what the family does the day before the funeral. Friends and family gather, usually at the funeral parlor where the body is. It's supposed to be more of a joyful gathering on behalf of the deceased, not a misery gathering. People talk about the person, share life stories and joyous memories. Or at least that was how the ones I've been to have been. Hope it helps!

A wake would be a visitation for someone who has died.

It's a celebration for someone who has passed away. (died) We Irish really celebrate that person's life.
