I am struggling with a few algebra problems here. I would appreciate it if someone could help. These are multiple choice:

1. A line passing through (5, –6) and (–9, y) is perpendicular to a line with slope . Find the value of y.

A) 1 B) –4 C) –2 D) –1

2. Given f(x) = –x – 4, find f(a – 3).

A) a – 8 B) –a – 1 C) a – 1 D) –a – 7

3. Determine which two equations represent parallel lines.

(a) y = –9x + 4(b) y = 9x + 4(c) y = x + 4
(d) y = –9x + 5

3-- a and D--if the # before x is the same, they are parallel

2. I won't do it, but you just plug a-3 in where x is
-(a-3) -4
Don't forget to distribute the negative!

Question 1) is incomplete. What slope is it perpendicular to?

2) f(x) = -x - 4. Therefore

f(a - 3) = -(a - 3) - 4 = -a + 3 - 4 = -a - 1

3) Parallel lines have the same slope. For a line in the form
y = mx + b, m is the slope.

All we have to do is look at the equations which have the same coefficient of x.

On the first question, you need to write the slope.

2. f(a-3)= -(a-3)-4
f(a-3)= -a+3-4
f(a-3)= -a-1

The answer is B.

3. Parallel lines are defined by having the same slope. We are trying to find 2 answers with the same slope. Since these lines are in y-intercept form, we can easily tell the slope. y=mx+b

m will give us the slope.

Since both (a) and (d) have the same m value (-9), they are parallel.

I hope that this helps.

1) You need to make the first question more clearer.

2)f(a-3)=-(a-3)-4
-a+3-4
-a-1

The answer is B

3)a and d are the parallel
