There is far too much anti-Americanism on this site and it's high time it stopped. I suspect that many of the people (UK) making these anti-American statements and remarks, have not actually met any Americans and know very little of the American way of life.

If someone posts a silly answer to a question and that answerer is located somewhere in the States, it's a safe bet that this person is a spotty teen, but not always.

If Americans wish to come on to the UK arm of the site, then they should understand that we are two nations separated by a common language. English, as she is spoke, is not the same as American, even though in most cases we understand each other. Often an interpretation may be required, most especially when us Brits are talking 'local' as of the NHS etc. This often baffles the Americans; not their fault. They won a war and went their own way, which does not include all the UK history since c1776.

While USA quickly arrived at 'democracy' it has taken us Brits right into the 20th century c1930s to achieve the same. So let's stop 'knocking' the Yanks. They got there ahead of us and are often far more sophisticated than we give them credit for.

Do not imagine, as is so often the case, that everything American is 'dumned down', it is not. America (USA) is an enormous country with a 300 million pop. It is far more diverse than UK will ever be with it's mere 58-60 million pop - inspite of what some Brits may think.

Look beyond the hamburgers and think of the fabulous musical scores of many famous Hollywood movies and you begin to understand just what American culture is really all about. The USA is full of fine art, theatre, cinema and much more culture besides.

In 2007 (not sure of date) the American NFL (National Football League) will be holding one of their most important maches right here in Capital City, London. It's going to be a BIG EVENT, with all the usual razzmatazz which surrounds American Football. It is estimated that half of America will watch this game live on TV. This is by far the best way ever of advertising London to the world and in particular the Americans.

Every American I have ever met has been friendly, amusing with a deep sense of irony, and are worldly aware. However the Americans I have met are either over here, and therefore well aware of the world outside America, or academics, who tend to have a fair grasp of the world around them too. It is the Americans we see on telly and read about that my opinion is low about. I know they exist in numbers because 33% of Americans voted for Bush, and I can only think that these people are either nasty or stupid, or just incredibly selfish, as America has pretty much the most right wing government in the world, and adopts a bullying foreign policy. I think it is the self centred, intolerant and ignorant attitude of the American right that gives the country a bad name (and with this comes the materialistic love of wealth above all other). I hope that most Americans are really like all the ones I have met, and some of these Bush voters just had an aberration.

Personally i hear many people talking down the Americans but their opinions are not representative of English people as a whole simply because all those who appreciate Americans do not shout off the odds. Its the same here with our Queen .
If one was to poll this question and then analyse the response person by person it would throw up an anomaly in that anyone of an age below 25 , born out of England ( and in it come to that) do not have the mutual respect both English and Americans have for each other. We are and will always be indebted for all you have done for us, without you we may well have lost ww2.

I'm presumming your American here, but here is my opinion of a stereotypical American:
loud, more "moralistic" or uptight when it comes to issues like sex, often over the top with big overwhelming personalities, but probably more overtly & initially friendly than us Brits.
I have spoken to many Americans online before who fit into most of what I said.
As for them being more freindly, I have seen those sort of "punked" type American programmes - the ones when someone is in need in the street & asks a stranger for help (which turns out to be a big joke in the end) well if it was the same situations in the UK (especially London) then people would be much more likely to just walk on by!

Mine is good really, I do have a go at people from the USA sometimes but that is only when I am having a go at President Bush for the war we are in now. Actually I have an American partner. On the whole I find people from the USA good people and have mail friends there. Just that sometimes I feel they are a little bit pushy. If you from there babe all my best wishes from England over the pond.

People see Americans as being backward and traditional. They laugh when they hear you say you're free. They are aware of the Totalitarian takeover in 1963.

For the most part nothing has changed in the American culture since the persecuted puritan extremist pilgrim types.

Very controlled group of people! I won't go on but I really could. Trust me when I say there is nothing to be jealous of though, HONESTLY!!!

The United States was/is a Plantation Corporation by the Bank of England. It is NOT a country, it is a CORPORATION!

BTW PROUD_BRITISH_MAN I lived in the US for 4 years. I doubt you've ever been or your 'unhinged' statements would be better grounded!

I've only ever known 3 Americans well, so I'm not really best placed to answer this! All three were lovely, friendly people - two of them invited us round for Thanksgiving Dinner once, that was so much fun :) America has given the world some incredible people, namely Johnny Cash :) I like America, hope to visit one day. Can I stay with you?

I'm English btw :)

I'm from America, and I think Europeans are more old school and laid back. There in the UK I heard teen sex was ok and so was drinking and partying at that age. No offense.
